Dr. Wendy Sherer entered veterinary school with aspirations of specializing in emergency medicine or equine care. However, the trajectory of our interests often diverges from our initial plans. She found herself drawn to the field of geriatric feline medicine, developing a profound affection for elderly, ill-tempered cats. Working with these old, bony felines became her passion, revealing a fondness for what she affectionately refers to as the old geezers and biddies.
In addition to her love for nurturing grumpy cats, she harbors a deep-seated passion for travel. Exploring new cultures, sampling unfamiliar cuisines, and embracing the diversity of the world excites her. In February, she and her husband embarked on a three-week adventure to Kenya, an experience she describes as nothing short of extraordinary. The opportunity to observe lions, elephants, giraffes, and cheetahs in their natural habitat was profoundly affecting. Although their next destination remains undecided, the anticipation of another journey fills her with excitement.
Recently, she decided to install a bird feeder to entertain her cats, a decision that swiftly escalated. Now the owner of five bird feeders, she has also acquired a bird identification book, begun crafting her own suet, and invested significantly in birdseed. She insists, humorously, that all these efforts are solely for the enjoyment of her cats.
Her household includes three unique cats: Seymour Toes, a 16-year-old polydactyl long-haired orange male; Marvie, a 10-year-old three-legged tuxedo and a formerly feral cat still shy around his own shadow; and Stevie, a 7-year-old Sphynx. Seymour and Marvie were both orphaned kittens she took under her care. Stevie, known for her spicy demeanor, was adopted from the Denver Animal Shelter after being surrendered due to aggression. Despite her challenging behavior, Stevie simply required an understanding family willing to respect her space, which she found in her new home. Dr. Shere says, “three doesn't seem like enough cats, but the ones who need me always find me.”
